Madrid

Madrid is located essentially at the center of Spain. It is a beautiful and diverse city, and should rank high on your list of places to visit while in Spain. From the Barajas International Airport in Madrid, which is the main gateway from the US and Europe, the Madrid Metro will move you quickly around the city. There is something for everyone here, from beautiful architecture, fun night life, bullfighting, museums, music, and tons of shopping.

Madrid was first settled by Muslims in the ninth century, but became Spain’s capital city in 1561. It has grown to become the third largest city in Europe, behind only London and Berlin. While it is a modern city, it still retains many of its historic neighborhoods and landmarks, including the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Teatro Royal, and the National Library building which was built in 1712.

The weather in Madrid fluctuates during the year, with average temperatures ranging from 35-90° Fahrenheit (3-31° Celsius). Due to its altitude and location, it does not receive much precipitation, but it can be observed throughout the year. Snowfall can be expected during the winter, and it is most rainy in the spring and autumn.

Madrid plays host to the largest Plaza del Toros (bullfighting ring) in all of Spain, with a capacity of almost 25,000 seats. This ring, Las Ventas, was established in 1929. You can watch bullfighting every day from mid-March through Mid-June, and every Sunday thereafter through October with online games. During the rest of the year, Las Ventas plays host to other events and concerts.

If you are a football fan, you will know that one of the most prestigious football clubs Real Madrid makes their home in this city. They play in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, and have won 9 European Cups to date.
